The Department of Justice is readying an antitrust case against Apple that could come as soon as March, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, pending signoff from senior officials within the DOJ's antitrust division. DOJ and Apple attorneys have met three times over a potential suit, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Music streaming platform Spotify lodged a competition complaint with European Union in 2019, alleging that Apple's then-mandatory in-app payments system violated antitrust law. Apple has also been mired in civil litigation filed by Fortnite maker Epic Games, hinging on whether Apple's App Store rules violated federal antitrust statues. A federal judge concluded in 2021 that Apple violated a California law but did not run afoul of federal antitrust statues.

Xi Jinping is in a struggle with China's military, purging senior commanders to reshape it. A Chinese invasion somewhere like Taiwan could drag the US into a Third World War, one analyst said. AdvertisementXi Jinping is fighting with China's own military, seeking to purge commanders he sees as unwilling or unable to go to war, military analysts told Business Insider. Since taking power in 2012, Xi has overhauled China's military by cutting deep into its personnel, seeking to improve military-civilian cooperation, and reshaping its structure, among other reforms. A Chinese invasion in East Asia would drag Western countries into something larger, he predicted.

Pleo appoints new CFO as it looks to get in shape for IPO

Danish fintech firm Pleo has appointed a new chief financial officer, the company told CNBC exclusively, beefing up its executive team — a sign the company is readying itself for an eventual initial public offering. Most notably, Lonning had experience as CFO at Danish food enzyme maker Chr Hansen. Chr Hansen, which is listed on the Danish stock exchange, is one of Denmark's most valuable publicly listed firms, with a market cap of more than $10 billion. The European Union recently approved a $22 billion merger between Chr Hansen and competitor Novozymes. That's a dilemma for companies, but even more so for the lifestyle of Pleo and tech companies."

At its first ever developer's day conference earlier this month, OpenAI tried to tackle the situation head on by announcing Copyright Shield. That's a promise that OpenAI will pay the legal fees of its business customers in the event they're sued for something they made using its products. "We can defend our customers and pay the costs incurred if you face legal claims around copyright," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in his keynote speech. But OpenAI rival Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers and backed by billions of dollars from investors like Google and Amazon is taking a different approach. But to the extent that liability does exist, Anthropic says it's the person using the product that bears the blame.

Such documents or charge sheets set out the EU competition watchdog's concerns on why deals could be anti-competitive. LAÚNDOS, Portugal (AP) — Guilherme Peixoto, a village priest in northern Portugal, has been busy this month celebrating Masses at his two parishes, presiding over remembrances for the dead — and preparing the electronic music set for his next international DJ gig. "They can think, 'If it’s possible for a priest to be DJ, it’s possible for me to like music, and festivals, and be Christian.'" The priest broke onto the global stage when the organizers of World Youth Day in Lisbon asked him to “wake up the pilgrims” at 7 a.m. before Pope Francis’ open-air Mass in August. There, he re-mixed electronic dance beats with words from Pope Francis’ encyclical about protecting the environment. “It’s very important to me to not only be the priest DJ, but be the shepherd of the community,” Peixoto said.

Blinken described all of these as “a work in progress” and acknowledged deep divisions over the pause concept. There has also been resistance to discussing Gaza's future, with the Arab states insisting that the immediate humanitarian crisis must be addressed first. Securing agreement from G7 members, none of which border or are directly involved in the conflict, may be a slightly less daunting challenge for Blinken. Despite some fraying around the edges, the group has preserved a unified front in condemning and opposing Russia’s war. Yet the Gaza crisis has inflamed international public opinion and democracies are not immune from intense passions that have manifested themselves in massive pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel demonstrations in G7 capitals and elsewhere.

If it works, the weapon's utility is debatable, and a nuclear weapons expert said it's likely for political show. The weapon isn't much of an addition beyond the nuclear strike options Russia already has in its arsenal, a nuclear weapons expert told Insider. Will it have "the ability to bypass interception lines" and be "invulnerable to all existing and future missile defense and air defense systems" as he has claimed? The missile, essentially a very-long range cruise missile, can't be intercepted by missile defense systems that are designed to counter ICBMs, meaning it could theoretically penetrate key enemy air defenses to strike its target. The agreement was designed to limit the use anti-ballistic missile systems intended to defend against nuclear attacks.

"We saw how the Russians fought in Ukraine and the mistakes they made," Brigadier General Hisham Ibrahim told The Economist. "They fought there in a single-corps fashion, instead of using combined arms tactics," he said of Russia's tank deployments. But Israel's tanks, Ibrahim said, have been trained on combined-arms tactics for several years now. Ukraine's tactics of using cheap drones and Next Generation Light Anti-Tank Weapons (NLAW) exacted a high price on Russia's tanks.
